Weather Synopsis for Friday & Thursday

Some leftover high cloud from the upper low that passed to our south will linger over much of the Cascades this morning before thinning mid-day. Areas of low clouds and fog as seen in the Stevens Pass area should not stick around long this morning. A negatively tilted frontal band extending from a low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska is slowly approaching the Washington coast this morning. The slow progression of the front should allow the Cascades to have an extended window of partly to mostly sunny skies through the early afternoon. The Olympics and Mt. Hood will see more clouds, a quicker cool down and the onset of light rain and snow in the afternoon. Winds will increase in the afternoon for these areas as well as for Mt. Baker.

The front will weaken as it passes through the Cascades this evening with pretty unimpressive precipitation totals expected overnight. Showers should diminish quickly after midnight. The one exception will the Mt. Baker area where a modest half inch of water or so is expected overnight in post-frontal showers. The front will usher in much cooler air and we should see widespread temperatures below freezing for the first time in over a week.

Weak longwave troughing will remain over the area Saturday along with onshore (westerly flow) at the surface. This should translate to slowly building cumulus in the afternoon with a chance of showers mainly for the Cascade Passes, west slopes and Olympics and more sun for the east slopes of the Cascades.
