Recreational Observation

4th Crossing to Mazama Ridge, Mazama Ridge to Reflection Lakes, then back uphill to Paradise

Dec. 30, 2017, 8 p.m. PST

Weather: Mix of sun, clouds, a few snow showers, temps in the upper 20s to low 30s, windy in the AM, easing off in the PM

Snowpack: Lots of water in the snowpack...dug a quick pit on a SW facing slope at 5400 and found saturated snow down to 100 cm. Two failures, one about 10cm down and a second at 80cm with a quick CT test Crusty day in Paradise...sometimes the upper crust supported a snowshoer, sometimes the snowshoer punched through. Skiers in the group reported less of a problem with the crust. Some pockets of unconsolidated snow but mostly a few CM of new snow on top of Friday's rain and wind crust. Lots of evidence of wind-transported snow.

Area Description: Paradise area: Mazama Ridge, Reflection Lakes

Avalanches: Slab avalanches seen in the back bowl on east side of Mazama Ridge and in Edith Creek basin. Loose wet debris from slides onto the Stevens Canyon road at Inspiration Point. No signs of avalanche activity on north-facing slopes of the Tatoosh below Castle and Pinnacle.
