South Climb, White River, Zigzag

Dec. 21, 2017, 3 p.m. PST

Weather: Mostly clear, some high cirrus. Temperatures in mid 20s. Wind moderate NNW above 7000. Moderate snow transport towards NE through SE aspects. Flagging of ridges above 7000ft, including summit ridges, became more pronounced in afternoon. Cornice and wind slab formation observed.

Snowpack: Surface generally smooth wind buffed , except near ridges where rock and large blue rime ice chicken heads were exposed. Good skiing quality on Zigzag and other wind buffed areas. Ski penetration between 1cm and 5cm. Early season coverage below 8000. No shooting cracks observed.

Area Description: Mt Hood Timberline

Avalanches: None observed on crater rim, Hawkins cliffs, White River glacier. Lee slopes were typically wind loaded but everything seemed very quiet.
