Recreational Observation

Mini tour to Hen Skin Lakes into Silver Basin until 6080'.

May 19, 2017, noon PST

Weather: Sunny and still, few puffy clouds hardly moving, somewhat 'rotating' in place. Prob upper 40's around 10:30a and 50's+ by 14:00p whereby the resort base was windy.

Snowpack: 10:30a resort snow in shade was firm, almost icy while the sunny snow was soft 1-2". By 11:30ish no snow was firm and icy. A 26-30 degree NE facing mini slope inside of Silver Basin at 6080' was slippery enough that skinning it was awkward. Boot sunk around 6". Skiing down it around 12:00 didn't propagate sloughs, it was creamy and rather sticky, some roller balls. Resort runs were easier to ski w less soft snow at surface.

Area Description: Silver Basin/Crystal

Avalanches: Didn't see any occur. Saw loose/wet from day(s) prior but not huge (D1-2?). Some good sized cornices still out all around the basin.
