Recreational Observation

Small shallow chute, 40°

Jan. 22, 2017, 11:30 a.m. PST

Weather: Moderate snow, moderate wind

Snowpack: Dug pit on SE aspect at 4800ft, 30°, for CT had Q2 on tap #15 10cm down in current windslab. No movement on 1/17 crust at with any force, but still sheared on that layer when pulling the block. A bit lower, steeper and NE it released however.

Area Description: near treeline band, NE aspect

Avalanches: I triggered R1D1 on entering a shallow ~40° chute with a 45° enterance. Propagated as a storm slab 20' wide by 20 cm deep, ran maybe 100m on very poor bond to 1/17 crust. Pit was exposed this was under old growth. Sent observation via app on 1/22 but doesn't appear to have stuck, app is buggy.
