Recreational Observation

Skin track from last turnout prior to the switchback trail to Klahhane Ridge summit east of Mt. Angeles. Traversed east and lapped southerly aspects before returning o the Hurricane Ridge Road.

Jan. 22, 2017, 2 p.m. PST

Weather: OVC SN (S1 - PPgp) L-M winds from the SE Overcast with light snow showers throughout the morning. Total accumulation <1". High of low 20's. Light-moderate winds observed from the SE as forecast.

Snowpack: Cornices and wind loading observed on the north slopes on Khahhane Ridge at 6000' just east of Mt. Angeles. Stable snow observed on southerly aspects. No significant signs of instability observed. Snow pit dug on 45 degree slope with a southerly aspect around 5200'. CTV (SP Q1) during compression test: Thurs-Friday storm slab (mix of RG & FC) reaction during block isolation down to the rain crust (IFrc - 50 cm), presumably from last Tues-Wens rain-on-snow event. Suspect reaction due to significant cutting force required to isolate block for compression test at the rain crust level. Rain penetrated the snow pack from 50cm to well below 100 cm, leaving mix of IFil, MFcl and MFpc between 50-100cm. 12/17 PWL difficult to identify, appears to be bonding well into current snowpack.

Area Description: South aspect on Klahhane Ridge at/near treeline.

Avalanches: Possible D2 activity observed on E-NE aspect IVO Sunrise Point; suspect slide occurred during forecasted avalanche cycle following rain-on-snow events last week.
