Recreational Observation

Chelan County Mountain Rescue was out near Mission Ridge practicing making observations of terrain, snowpack and weather.

Jan. 14, 2017, noon PST

Weather: Sunny, light SW winds, increasing in afternoon to moderate with blowing snow.

Snowpack: In sheltered areas below treeline saw HS up to 100cm, stepping out of the trees had highly variable and wind effected snowpack with generally less but up to 120cm HS. Most recent wind transport was from the W. Found FC and DH on or slightly above the ground, up to 5mm in size, with slabs up to P hardness above. Snowpack tests showed the large FC very reactive to PST, ECT and CT's. Observed cracking near the skis in one shallow area. Ski tests on a low consequence, small, steep roll did not produce any results.

Area Description: Clara / Marion Lake Basin. Near treeline, in sparse larches.
