Recreational Observation

Multiple lines skied at and above treeline.

Jan. 12, 2017, 11:30 a.m. PST

Weather: Clear, windless, becoming warmer around noon but without apparent thermal effect on the snow.

Snowpack: Limited, thin, nonreactive wind-slab in the top 10 m of the slope, otherwise right-side-up sheltered snow with excellent riding conditions. Exit to Heather Canyon was combo wind-board and wind-scoured. The further out of tree line the more dense and wind-affected the surface snow became, and this could be the reactive setup for the weekend warmup.

Area Description: N/NE facing Pea Gravel Ridge

Avalanches: None observed or triggered. Fridge-sized cornice drops and ski cuts produced no results aside from small sluffs in the loose snow. Watched Meadows pro patrol shoot a variety of upper-heather slopes with only small wind slap releases on steep terrain.
