Jan. 6, 2017, 3 p.m. PST

Weather: Clear with partial high clouds

Snowpack: 10-20 cm extremely faceted snow on top of multiple breakable crusts up to approximately 4000'. In higher elevations the crust disappears and yielded good powder skiing. Widespread surface hoar 1-3 cm in sheltered clearings below treeline but not higher, probably due to wind. Wind slabs noted at ridge tops.

Area Description: Skied central summit of Red mountain down the ridge through glades and clearcuts.

Avalanches: None observed but we did get a whumpf from a decent wind slab at ridge top.
