Recreational Observation

Christmas Pass - Susan Jane Area

Dec. 21, 2016, 5:45 p.m. PST

Weather: Clear skies, light to no wind

Snowpack: Observed 1-2 mm surface hoar on a variety of aspects. Average HS was 195 cm. About 30 cm of snow sitting on top of 12/17 crust (1.5 cm thick), with 20 cm above that, 1 cm crust, and then 10 cm of nice, wind affected snow. No whumpfing or shooting cracks observed in 6 hour tour. Stuck mostly to lower angled terrain and well-spaced trees. 3 PST's 20/100 (END) down 30cm on 40 degree South facing slope. Went on top of 12/17 crust in small facets and decomposing stellars just above the crust. These caught your attention. It felt like yesterday's crust was supportive and bridging a bit. Temps ranged from 31.5F @ 5460 at 1250 to 17.5F 1000' lower at 1315 (not a typo). Ski quality was good.

Area Description: Toured East of Stevens Pass between 3600 and 5460.
