Recreational Observation

Traverse along sunrise ridge from Maggies to the west flank of Mt Angeles. Exit to road just above the switchback trailhead.

Dec. 3, 2016, noon PST

Weather: Partly cloudy. Temps in the upper 20's. Visibility to the horizon.

Snowpack: The warming trend during the afternoon of 12/2 resulted in a 1cm thick surface crust on all aspects up to 5600 ft. This crust is capping cold powder snow of 4F hardness. No pit was dug today, but several HS measurements were taken along the route with depths of 1.2 - 1.5 m on E to NE aspects and similar depths on the west slope of Mt Angeles. Skiing was challenging today with the snow conditions and this crust may be a layer to watch for after the next storm cycle.
