Recreational Observation

The Terrible Traverse is a steep, east-facing slope on the Bennett Pass Road.

Feb. 24, 2016, noon PST

Weather: Partly sunny.

Snowpack: Warm, soft snow that seemed well bonded to lower layers.

Area Description: Bennett Pass, Terrible Traverse.

Avalanches: We observed a small wet loose avalanche. It came down from above the road grade as we crossed the Terrible Traverse. It didn't seem to me large enough to bury someone, but there was enough snow that, had it hit one of us, it would likely have knocked us off the narrow traverse and down the steep slope below.
