Recreational Observation

Leeward side (north) of the ridge to the east of the Hurricane Ridge ski area

Feb. 20, 2016, noon PST

Weather: Partly sunny, 32 degrees

Snowpack: ~8 inches of new storm snow over a rain crust

Area Description: Hurricane Ridge area

Avalanches: 40 to 50 ft wide slab with an 8 inch crown was skier triggered on the leeward side of the ridge. Skier was able to arrest at trigger point. Multiple small cornice drops were done prior to dropping in. In hindsight, isolated area was obviously wind-loaded. Slide continued down to the bottom of the basin at a relatively moderate pace. One skier in party rode the slide path (rain crust bed) to retrieve dislodged ski. Skiers climbed slide path back to ridge.
