Recreational Observation

Climbed the peak just to the SW of 3-way peak intending to ski into the Morse Creek basin. After backing off the line based on wind loading concerns we went down the ridge with the intention of skiing back into Crystal lake basin.

Dec. 31, 2018, 1:30 a.m. PST

Weather: Sun, low 20’s F. Minimal wind.

Snowpack: Approximately 30-40 cm new snow. Mostly unconsolidated. Some signs of wind loading on lee slopes.

Area Description: Crystal Lakes Basin. Crystal mountain backcountry

Avalanches: Ski cut NNW facing slope at approximately 6500 feet. 1 foot deep slab broke and propagated across slope 75+ feet. The slab appears to have been storm snow that slid on last week’s surface hoar layer. Very similar to the report from Cache Creek on 12/30.
