Recreational Observation

Approached from Paradise parking lot, following cat road (Skyline trail) around southern flank of Alta Vista to low angle eastern slopes.

Jan. 31, 2016, 12:30 p.m. PST

Weather: Obscured skies and limited visibility. Light SW winds. Temp -4.5 deg C

Snowpack: E Aspect, 5738', 22 deg slope, test pit. HS 282cm. ~35 cm of relatively unconsolidated (F to 4F) storm snow on rain crust. Variable hardness, ~30 cm thick layer of melt freeze and ice forms below storm snow. Moist snow found below ~1m depth. Several somewhat sensitive layers within storm snow (CTE6 Q3 PC at 15 cm and CTM20 Q3 PC at 22cm). No release on SS-rain crust interface with CT. However, RB6 MB (Q2 RP) at 35 cm on rain crust.

Area Description: E facing slope, approx. 150' below ridge crest, 22 deg open slope

Avalanches: None observed. Noticeable fresh cornice development on ridge north of Alta Vista from SW - W winds.
