Stevens Pass

Jan. 30, 2016, 11:30 a.m. PST

Weather: Partly cloudy. 28-31 degrees with light wind. 11 inches of snow in past 24 hours.

Snowpack: 7-10 inches on top of a fairly hard rain crust that formed the day or two before it began to snow.

Area Description: In bounds chutes above Big Chief Bowl in the Stevens Pass ski area. NE aspect, leeward and protected by trees.

Avalanches: Near the top of the chute before it began to narrow into the trees, shooting cracks set a small 5' X 3' storm slab but it didn't slide more than a foot before stopping. Further down, after traversing into a skis wide chute, shooting cracks set off another 6' wide soft storm slab that slid on the rain crust roughly 50'-60' and settled into a group of trees.
