Recreational Observation

Jan. 10, 2015, 3:30 p.m. PST

Weather: Overcast, calm, 29.8F

Snowpack: average depth 3" Demonstrating and practicing stability tests, ECT, CT and shovel shear with up to 45 students and staff.... Had several failures: ECT 14 & ECT 15, crack propagated halfway and completely across the entire column.... fairly smooth surface... Failure was about 14'' down on a shallow layer of low density snow between two crusts... Possibly some surface hoar on the crust.

Area Description: Holden Village vicinity, valley bottom, 3200'

Avalanches: Tests were done on a south facing slope near the valley bottom... At this time of the year the valley only has about an hour and half of sunshine.... The test slope probably is shaded by trees....... Actually had a CT3 on the same layer in the same location......
