Recreational Observation

Gully to the wilderness boundary then to the first log bridge, crossing commonwealth creek

Jan. 22, 2016, 1 p.m. PST

Weather: Rain

Snowpack: Very soft

Area Description: Commonwealth Basin

Avalanches: Tree bombs were the problem. This is a safe route from avalanche danger . The rain on Thursday night cleared a lot of the snow from the trees so tree bombs were not a serious problem in low elevations. Upon entering the basin the temperature was initially low and the trees were heavily loaded. The combination of rising temperatures and the rain became a serious problem. Huge tree bombs began unloading. I was hit by one and buried up to my knees and was unable to extricate myself without my shovel. Luckily I was not injured. This is going to be a serious problem on Saturday if the temps stay elevated.
