East Slopes Central - Lake Chelan to South of I-90

Jan. 21, 2016, 11 a.m. PST

Weather: Overcast. Valley fog at times up to ~4300'. Temps from 0 C, up to 2 C at 5900' by 1400. At noon, 5100', Tair:1.5 C, Tsurf:0 C, T20: -3 C. Winds L- M from south. No precip. No blowing snow, but signs of light previous transport from the north.

Snowpack: HST: 15cm HS:100-120cm Found 1/11 SH down 40cm and 1/3 SH down 60cm, in various sites from 5100' meadow to 5900' below ridgetop on northerly aspects. 1/11 very reactive to tests, CTM SC & ECTP22. In some hand shears column failed on isolation. 1/3 also reactive with several CTH SP. Small test slopes produced limited results. 30cm storm slab would move on >35deg rolls. Steeper rolls or unsupported features might get 1/11 to shear but with minor propagation. No whumps or cracks noted. With the warm sticky snow cornices had fresh growth. Noticed one fridge sized chunk from a recent natural cornice fall.

Area Description: Blewett Pass, 2 miles SE of pass.

Avalanches: Cornice fall, 3'x3'x6' block, natural.
