Recreational Observation

Mission Peak via Clara Lake trail

Jan. 17, 2016, noon PST

Weather: Snowing, with breaks, wind westerly, temps 27-29

Snowpack: We saw and remotely triggered several avalanches, no natural avalanches were observed. Shooting cracks, settling and avalanche were observed on primarily east aspect slope. Having skied the area regularly throughout the last six days we were surprised by the touchy nature of today's snow.

Area Description: Mission Peak

Avalanches: The reactive layer was the buried surface hoar. Skiing the area for the last few days, and given the nature of the last two weather events to come through, prior to the tour we suspected the surface hoar problem had been greatly reduced, that turned out not to be the case. We did ski steep stable slope, but most of the east aspects seemed to be unstable. ECT 15 @ 25 surface hoar but did not displace. Poor light for photos hope it is of some use, shows a step down.
