Recreational Observation

Skied northerly aspects 2500' to 5600'. Found quality powder skiing to valley floor. Slight zipper crust on more eastern aspects.

Jan. 14, 2016, noon PST

Weather: Clear and below freezing all day. Calm winds today. Evidence of westerlies from yesterday.

Snowpack: HS 130-150cm. Found SH present 35-40cm down up to 5mm mostly laid down from prev strong east winds. CTH Q1(SC). ECTN21. This layer was easy to spot as a thin grey line in the profile. We skied conservatively but felt the slab above it wasn't able to initiate a slide. Avoided a few wind packed denser zones in steep terrain on the descent. More investigation needed to see if it is widespread.
