Recreational Observation

We skied the xc trails at Blewet Pass and summitted a small nub near trail xc 141. We dug a pit to find HS at 50 cm.

Jan. 10, 2016, 2 p.m. PST

Weather: Cloudy with no precipitation or wind.

Snowpack: HS = 50 cm. Boot Pen near pit was 42 cm. (This was surprising) Facets were present in the bottom 26 cm. A melt-freeze crust was found at 26-32 cm. Performed a shovel shear test (STE) to test interface between melt-freeze crust and the 18cm layer of 0.5mm rounded grains above it.

Area Description: 3/4 mile south of Blewett Pass.

Avalanches: Saw evidence a small slab avalanche on a steep embankment along Hwy 97 south of Blewet Pass. Roller balls were seen along the Hwy 97 as well.
