Recreational Observation

East Slopes Central - Lake Chelan to South of I-90

Jan. 2, 2016, 9:30 a.m. PST

Weather: Clear skies. Valley temps from -16 C to -11 at 4500' ridgetop. Light winds from NE.

Snowpack: Surface hoar widespread, mostly 10-15mm but up to 33mm. This is atop a few cm of faceting snow from last week. Beneath these on solar aspects was a weak sun crust. Midpack mostly consolidating but for 12/16 SH down about 50cm. Found this in multiple sites from valley at 3300' and up at ridgetop, including solar aspects. On a SE 20 deg slope, this layer produced a CT23 RP, ECTP23 & PST 56/100 (End) down 45cm on 20151216. Slightly more reactive here perhaps due to slight suncrust beneath the SH. HS averaged 80cm. Old signs of wind loading. No results to ski tests.

Area Description: Blewett Pass, west of pass.

Avalanches: None observed.
