West Slopes North - Canadian Border to Skagit River

Dec. 29, 2014, 10:30 a.m. PST

Weather: clear; light to no wind below 5,000 ft; strong east wind at higher elevations with rapid snow transport

Area Description: South side of Mount Baker

Avalanches: Remotely triggered one (size D1) hard wind slab approx 5800 ft near Metcalfe Moraine; another hard wind slab (size D2, 3ft crown) triggered sympathetically in the next gully west of the first avalanche. We remotely triggered another small hard wind slab when descending the area to be out of the wind/snow transport. No avalanches were triggered with skiers on the slabs. We were able avoid wind loaded terrain through route selection, yet energy was transferred to nearby sensitive slabs.
