Recreational Observation

Quick trip for NWAC to observe HS and recent storm snow in the Below Treeline - Near Tree Line elevation band. I took the "winter route" from Alpental and toured to the top of the "fan" below the East Face of Chair

Dec. 29, 2014, 10 p.m. PST

Weather: Scattered and broken skies, calm-light N winds, high of 23F. Low crest level clouds hung to the west slopes

Snowpack: Height of Snow (HS) and Height of Storm (HST) 3500ft, HS 85cm, HST 35cm - bottom of Mushroom Couloir 3650ft, HS 135cm, HST 50cm - near Source Lk 4300ft, HS 145cm, HST 70cm - top of fan Profile at 4300ft. SE aspect, 36deg. CTM BRK down 27cm (x2) on density change from Fist-4F. CTH RP down 55cm (x2). No results from quick tests. Moist rain crust is 70cm down that varies in thickness. Basal pack moist to wet to the ground below crust.

Area Description: Upper S. Fork of Snoqualmie drainage, Source Lake area

Avalanches: Some small loose dry from cliffs above summer trail. No cracking, whumphing or avalanches observed near and below TL. Very Good ski quality on the fan
