Recreational Observation

Skinned up normal ridge approach and skied NE aspect at 5600 ft below tree line.

Feb. 23, 2018, 2 p.m. PST

Weather: Began blue bird with no wind and cold (teens). Wind picked up around 4 pm from west blowing low density snow easily. Skin track began to fill in quickly.

Snowpack: Newton canyon below tree line 5600 ft NE aspect. Skied excellent low density cold powder with little cohesion. Right side up surface snow 30 cm fist on top of a 1 finger layer of older storm snow. No indications below tree line of wind slab at ridge tops. There was surface hoar even in sheltered areas that could become a buried layer with Fri PM storm. Winds picked up from W around 4 pm blowing snow and quickly filling in skin track.
