Recreational Observation

S. aspect 6800'- 4200' Old growth trees , glades , ribs , bowls , rollovers .

Jan. 11, 2018, 1:33 p.m. PST

Weather: Snowing 2" per hr. total 9" during the day . Light wind on ridge . Easterly flow with cross loading . End of day clearing. mid 20s temp.

Snowpack: 9" new snow over 12+ older soft snow on hoar layer down to firm base and old crust layer. New snow started cold and warmed during snow event.

Area Description: NCH 20 Cuthroat Creek Arena

Avalanches: Natural avalanche cycle in progress as well as constant skier triggered releases of new snow stepping down to below hoar layer approx. 12" plus depth of entrained snow. Shooting cracks every cut or turn. Snow moved on every turn on every skier , Descended off of fall line high speed from tree to tree while being submersed in face shots. Trees were unloading . Rock faces unloaded triggering new snow and stepping down , running 100s of feet through openings and trees . Best descending was within deposition snow bands.
