Recreational Observation

Clearcuts toward Arrowhead SW ridge; poked around lower Henry's Creek. Sounded like a busy control day up at Stevens a drainage west.

Jan. 10, 2018, 7 a.m. PST

Weather: Moderate, but consistent westerly winds, building and transporting snow at all elevations; snowing consistently 5-8 am; ~5" of new snow overnight.

Snowpack: ~5" overnight snow (fist) over a sandwich of rain/melt-freeze crusts (pencil, knife, respectively) that capped saturated snow at 4300'. Small, shallow wind slabs collapsing on 1/5 crust below tree line. Apparent density change in storm snow as westerly flow blew in yesterday. Crusts are suspicious moving forward; not as prevalent >4500'. Still relatively thin cover below 4k'.

Area Description: Arrowhead SW ridge

Avalanches: Storm snow already rinsing off of steep, terrain that had thawed and refrozen. Lots of relic wet activity from the last five days at lower elevations.
