Weather Synopsis for Friday night through Monday

An upper trough brings cooler and drier air into the region behind a very warm and wet frontal system. Some low-level moisture will linger behind the front as the flow turns more to the W or NW. A swath of banded rainfall extends from Portland to the north Puget Sound region on Friday afternoon with a convergence zone having formed, aimed at the Mountain Loop area. All this is expected to gradually sag southward overnight with precipitation gradually cutting off from north to south and the convergence zone shifting toward Stevens Pass before tapering by around midnight. The upper-level trough should usher in cooler temperatures, but they are only expected to drop to around 5000-6000 ft. By contrast to Washington State, Mt. Hood should find rainfall increasing overnight. Higher elevations on the volcanoes may receive several inches of fresh snow overnight. Winds may be in the moderate range at higher elevations on the Cascade east slopes but should be light elsewhere.

On Saturday, expect warmer temperatures east of the Cascade Crest. High clouds may linger in many areas as the frontal band is slow to exit the region, with westerly flow keeping a fair amount of lower cloud cover along the west slopes of the Cascades. Temperatures should be spring-like with light winds.

A ridge moves into the region Saturday night as the trough shifts further east. Expect little change in the pattern on Sunday with more widespread sunshine expected than on Saturday.
