A very good, technical book on avalanche forecasting and control. Good photos and diagrams. Cost about $20.

Avalanche Awareness, A Practical Guide to Safe Travel in Avalanche Terrain

Accidents in North American Mountaineering

Published annually since 1948 by The American Alpine Club and The Alpine Club of Canada ( Banff).

Although primarily about mountaineering accidents, it includes avalanche accidents. Current edition usually available at most outdoor stores. Cost — approximately $10.

An excellent reference about avalanche accidents in the United States, plus an excellent summary of information on avalanche awareness, avoidance, rescue, and statistics. Cost approximately $21.

Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain

Tremper, Bruce. 2001. The Mountaineers, Seattle, WA. An excellent and very readable treatement of the avalanche phenomenon by one of the best US avalanche educators and forecasters.
